Starting an Online Business

Starting an online businessLet’s face it, we are living in tough economic times every where you turn people are looking  to save a buck or two. Small Businesses are closing down and job layoffs seem everywhere.

In the midst of all these uncertainties, there is hope!  The technological age and more over the internet boom has brought with it new opportunities and innovations that allow even the common man to become an entrepreneur. The fact that you have stubble upon this article is already proof that you have what it takes to start an online business.

If you would stay with me, I will show you how to start an online Business from scratch or upgrade and existing business with little or no money and the profits can be really remarkable. Every good thing takes time and dedication and this is by no means a quick rich scheme although it could make you good cash in little time, but my idea is not to market you some scheme, but to systematically assist you in developing an online Business that will generate a steady flow of income for you.

Online business is a great way to start a business since Internet start-ups has very low over head and start up costs.

My main focus throughout these articles will be centered on blogging using word press however the principles online here can be applied to most online business.

Brain Storm

Give yourself some time to think ,Great ideas comes from great thinkers, so it very important to allow yourself time to ponder on business ideas. Evaluate each idea and eliminate those that are weak. Try staying on your turf, too many times businesses are birth as a result of envy an the outcome is instant failure due to lack of lack of knowledge. Choose to focus your business ( blog , service ,products etc) ideas on thing you already have a wealth of knowledge about.

Don’t try to reinvent the wheel.

If the business you are getting into is identical to another business that is already establish and has a strong branding, then do not waste your time  and resources trying recreating the same business, if you can do it better then by all means go ahead. e.g. I would not advise you to create another search engine to do the very same thing  Google does since Google already has a very strong brand and has the resources to surpass your idea, Try to be unique, I am sure that there are millions of ideas floating around so do not limit yourself or box your self in and think that there is a shortage of ideas.

Find a Niche

Now that you have brainstorm and eliminated many of your ideas and further removing duplicate ideas you are now ready to find your niche. Lets say through elimination you have come up with an idea related to finance, you now need to find out which area of finance most  people are interested in. Here is where researching is important and Google Trends solves this problem. Google trend will help gain insight as to how the masses are responding to a particular trend (use this tool to research your niche).

Write your vision down

I cannot emphasis how important this step is, many a times businesses start up selling one product for example: health care products and before you know it they are selling cars, and no sooner you hear they are out of business. Write you vision for you business down, make it simple it should include you end picture of your business and always look at it as a guide as you seek to expand.

Find a good Domain name

Find a good domain name that best describes your business [learn how to choose a good domain name for your business].

Whether the site is a commercial, nonprofit organization or just a hobby site, always go for a Dot Com (.com). If your site is a non profit organization my advice is to buy both the (.com) and the (.org) in that domain name; the reason is if you allow your competitor to register the (.com) on you while you register the .org ; your competitor will receive all your traffic since people on a whole are more dispose to typing your domain name with a .com extension.

Go Social

Since social sites is fast becoming a popular way of marketing for small and large online business alike. You need to associate as much of these social sites with your branding or domain name. e.g. If your domain name is smallbusiness.com the you would need to register your youtube account as www.youtube.com\smallbusiness , www.facebook.com\smallbusiness, www.twitter.com\smallbusiness. “You got the idea”. This will allow you to easily extend your branding and allow easy communication and associate with your customers and  product /services.
